Little Leigh Primary School

Together we care, together we learn and together we grow

Art Statement of Intent

At Little Leigh Primary School, we recognise the vital role of art and design in allowing invaluable opportunities for curiosity, creativity and self–expression.  Art is implicitly interwoven into our curriculum through the teaching of key skills and high quality materials which enhance the broad range of exciting themes that we teach. Through these experiences, children develop resilience, confidence and critical thinking skills that can be transferred to every subject area.

Art Curriculum

Our curriculum introduces every member of our school community to a wide range of art and artists, including those from different periods and cultures, providing children with an understanding of how art impacts and enhances societies and our surroundings. Every year, there is a clear progression of skills, which build on prior learning – such as use of tools and techniques with increasing mastery.

We aim to encourage our children to be risk takers, evaluators and reflective and engaged learners. Through their knowledge and experiences of art and culture, they will have developed preferences and made choices which will have a positive, life-long impact.

Examples of Children's Work

As part of their work on the theme of Hansel and Gretel, Year 6 created a tree using modelling wire and modroc.  The leaves were created with clay, decorated with carefully mixed acrylics and embellished with statements from The Rights of the Child.
