Art Statements of Intent, Implementation and Impact
Intent:
Our curriculum aims to inspire and enable high quality visual arts teaching and learning. Designed around the idea that art is far more than a series of technical skills, our holistic curriculum nurtures creative thinking skills and helps ensure pupils learn through art, as well as about art.
The teaching of art at Little Leigh Primary instils an appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts. We aim to immerse chlldren in a range of visual, tactile and sensory experiences which enable them to communicate what they see, think and feel through the use of the elements of colour, texture, form and pattern. Our curriculum aims to provide every child with opportunties to explore ideas and meanings through studying the work of artists and designers. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and on different periods and cultures.
We aim to encourage children to become risk-takers, evaluators adn reflective and engaged learners.
Implementation:
To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in art, we implement a curriculum that is designed by AccessArt. The emphasis is on journeyful teaching and learning which empowers children to become confident creative decision makers. It is knowledge-rich and pupils will learn a wide range of skills, developing understanding and showing clear progression. But crucially, the knowledge and understanding pupils will build will go far beyond technical, factual knowledge.
As in so many areas of our curriculum, learning is built through a weaving, layering and revisiting of experiences.
Impact:
When children reach the end of Year 6 and have journeyed through our rich, challenging and amitious art curriculum, they will have experienced a wealth of art materials and processes throughout their time at Little Leigh Primary School and will have formed an understanding of what those materials and processes are. They will have encountered a breadth of art and design, multiculturally and historically, so that they have a wealth of art knowledge to draw upon for themselves to create thier own artwork. Through their knowledge and experiences of art and culture, they will have developed preferences and made choices which will have a positive, life-long impact.
